Scientists think that the meteor that lit up skies over Russia originated in the asteroid belt

On Feb. 15, 2013, a small asteroid entered Earth’s atmosphere over Chelyabinsk, Russia. Estimates put the asteroid at ~17 meters in diameter with a mass of ~11,000 metric tons and traveling ~18 km/sec.  This NASA created math activity can be used in classrooms to use a real world headline making event in their math lessons.

creating order in a card deck by shuffling?

Persi Diaconis  is a Magician turned mathematics professor has written book titled Magical Mathematics: The Mathematical Ideas That Animate Great Magic Tricks outlining the math behind some of his favorite card tricks.  Diaconis was inspired by the work of French mathematician Paul Lévy in the idea of perfect shuffling, taking a standard deck of cards is carefully shuffled eight times and ends up returning precisely to its starting arrangement .
The gaming industry is particularly interested in the efficacy of shuffling as those remaining bits of order in a deck are what card counters use to beat the house.
